Strawberry Rhubarb Cronut

The best bite around NYC this April!

Back again!

This time I was particularly excited because strawberry rhubarb is one of my absolute favorite flavors. Fortunately, I preordered these cronuts so I held my chest high and skipped the whole line. Plus, I didn’t have to get up early. I got to the bakery around noon and the staff saved them in the back for me.

In case you didn’t know, cronuts can be preordered two weeks in advance on the Dominique Ansel website. Load the page at 11 am on any given Monday and hopefully you’ll be quick enough to reserve some before they run out. And oh boy, they go quick. I often don’t get cronuts even when I’m sitting down and refreshing the page unremittingly at 10:59 am. They’re so freakin' popular!

Anyway, this Cronut was absolutely delicious. Out of the nine Cronuts I’ve tried at this point, this one was the second best. Why wasn’t it the best? Well, yellow peach black tea (August 2014) was just something else. Also, yellow peach black tea was the first cronut I ever tried, so it has a soft spot in my heart. Regardless, this Cronut was phenomenal for many reasons. For me, the highlight was the strawberry jam, which tasted so fresh and worked to balance out the sweetness of the icing. Also, the rhubarb cream wasn’t overwhelming, but its subtle richness brought out the flakiness of the dough and the fruity taste of the jam. Overall, absolutely tremendous. Surely worth the wait even if you miss the preorder.
