NYC Bite: Little Cupcake Bakeshop
Little Cupcake Bakeshop is a back-to-the-basics bakery. The staff fuses together simple, local ingredients from farms throughout the Northeast to produce some of the most delicious desserts around. The bakery is best known for its Brooklyn Blackout Cake—a three-tiered devil’s food cake layered with chocolate pudding, slicked with dark chocolate frosting, and topped with additional devil’s food crumbs. It was hailed “the best chocolate cake in the United States” by Food and Wine Magazine. Quite an achievement. Little Cupcake Bakeshop is also renowned for its Mott Street Cupcake (vanilla bean cake drenched in espresso, topped with homemade mascarpone icing), and Blue Velvet Cupcake (fluffy buttermilk cake flavored with blueberries from farms in New Jersey, finished with homemade cream cheese icing). All three of them definitely live up to the hype.
But there’s a gem here that not many people know about—possibly because it’s hidden in a not-so-prominently-located freezer. Behind the register (which is staffed by people as sweet as the desserts they serve), you’ll see pints of homemade ice cream with the bakery’s best mix-ins. The flavors range from Brooklyn Blackout to Southern Red Velvet—from Raspberry Cheesecake to Peanut Butter & Jelly, and best of all, Illy Espresso with Brownie. The espresso ice cream has a unique texture—soft like custard, but still, definitely rich enough to be categorized as an ice cream. It’s flavored with Illy coffee, imported from Italy, and if you look closely enough, you’ll be able to see the specks of fresh espresso in every spoonful. This offers the ultimate base for the bakery's thick, fudgy brownie, which is mixed into the ice cream Cold Stone style. Just one bite and you’ll taste the freshness of the ingredients—the old-school combination of chocolate and coffee executed perfectly.
If you're nearby, you can skip the cupcakes. You can even skip the blackout cake. But you can’t miss this.
