NYC Bite: Banana Butterscotch Cake

The hidden gem of Dominique Ansel Bakery.

Surprise, surprise—I made my way down to Dominique Ansel Bakery again. However, I wasn’t there for the famed Cronut or the Cookie Shot or the Frozen Smore. I was there to try some items in the often-neglected pastry case.

Now, if you’ve been inside of Dominique Ansel Bakery, you’ll know that its home to a display case full of incredible pastries. But, these creations are far less talked about than the bakery’s staple products. On this trip, I chose to eat a particularly unusual and under-the-radar baked good: the Banana Butterscotch Cake. This delectable cake if filled with a butterscotch and Caramelia (caramelized milk chocolate) mousse, which surrounds a moist square of banana bread that is topped with caramelized banana slices. Finally, it’s coated in a gentle hibiscus gelée.

As you break the hibiscus seal, the butterscotch-chocolate mousse becomes visible. It’s unbelievably light and airy, giving the cake a gentle, almost weightless feel. Towards the center, you’ll find a slice of banana bread that’s been soaked to a perfectly moist texture that allows the cake to almost dissolve in your mouth. Thin slices of sweet banana lie on top of the banana bread, giving the cake a fruity kick. Lastly, the Hibiscus gelée is truly the icing on the cake. It’s not overpowering, but its tropical hints complete the cake by bringing out the other flavors.

If you are going to be near Dominique Ansel Bakery soon, you absolutely must try this cake. It’s far better than some of the Cronuts I’ve tried, as well the other renowned treats that have people lining up around the block. I would strongly recommend this cake and the DKA above everything else at the bakery. Plus this is coming from someone who has tried nearly everything at the bakery!

But seriously, skip the lines and smile as you walk by. Order the Banana Butterscotch Cake and you wont be disappointed.
